1) Choose Fresh Air instead of Shopping
Instead of shopping, spend the day outside; join the nearly 400,000 participants who refuse to stand in line on Black Friday and are participating in REI’s #OptOutside campaign.
Make sure to check out Outdoor Outreach’s staff’s top 5 hikes in San Diego County, as well REI’s #OptOutside page, which includes customized suggestions in your area.
And if you live in California, good news: you can also snag a free pass to one of 116 California state parks! The conservation organization Save the Redwoods League teamed up with the California State Parks Foundation and California State Parks to offer free day-use passes — while they last — to parks around the state. No more parking fees!
To get your pass, to the #GreenFriday website and select a park you want to visit. Enter your email address and then print out a pass (based on availability) that you’ll need to display on your dashboard. The offer is limited to one pass per email, and it’s good for one day only (Black Friday).

2) Volunteer Your Time and Talent
Help the communities who experience significant barriers to access to the outdoors.
Outdoor Outreach has many volunteer opportunities available next week and in December. Check out our volunteer calendar here, and if you’re not a member of the Outdoor Outreach family yet, sign up for our next volunteer orientation on Wednesday, Dec. 14:

3) Support companies that give back
- If you shop online on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, shop with Amazon Smile: simply go to smile.amazon.com, select the organization you want to support, and Amazon will donate a portion of your total;
- While shopping on Amazon, also check out our wish list, and consider dropping something for Outdoor Outreach in your basket;
- This year, Patagonia will donating 100{2e6a14a802f6c0526efcdcd4d377bd7dae32d0d051e7af4b5c2b342c0b4660ed} of their global Black Friday sales to grassroots organizations working to protect our planet.
A special thank you to our partner prAna, who will be donating to Outdoor Outreach on Black Friday!
4) Donate on Giving Tuesday
Join a day of national giving on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Why Tuesday?
- A counterpoint to the hyper-consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday;
- Your gift on Tuesday, Nov. 29 will be kicking off our year-end #GreaterOutdoors campaign, by providing a place for at-risk youth to build a strong sense of self and belonging;
- No fees on Tuesday: this means 100{2e6a14a802f6c0526efcdcd4d377bd7dae32d0d051e7af4b5c2b342c0b4660ed} of your donation will go to the youth Outdoor Outreach serves;
- The first 5 donations above $50 on Nov. 29 will receive an OO t-shirt.
