Our Programs
Our Approach
Through our programs, Outdoor
Outreach provides youth with positive, healthy alternatives
to the negative influences that surround them. Experiences
such as climbing a cliff, surfing a wave or snowboarding
down a mountain present exhilarating challenges that youth
can successfully meet with preparation, training and a
desire to succeed. Through these experiences, we incorporate
elements of proven youth development models with outdoor
activities to improve teens’ ability to thrive, despite
their family and community challenges.
Outdoor Outreach activities foster academic achievement;
skill- and competency-building; self-efficacy, self-worth,
hopefulness; and connectedness to peers, caring adults, the
community and the natural environment. These factors have
been shown to promote healthy youth development across a
spectrum of adolescents, regardless of gender, age or
ethnicity.
2009
Annual Report
Outdoor Outreach
programs have a proven and measurable track record of
improving the lives of the youth we serve. Outdoor Outreach
trips form the foundation of our various programs. These
trips are designed to provide a structured and safe
experience that is both mentally and physically challenging.
All trips are organized, supervised and directed by Outdoor
Outreach staff and volunteers, and are provided at no cost
to the youth who participate. Outdoor Outreach provides the
transportation, equipment, food and clothing for the 10 to
15 youth involved in each trip.
Outdoor Outreach is committed to transforming the lives of
at-risk youth. Our core goal is to provide comprehensive,
ongoing programming designed to produce profound,
life-changing opportunities with measurable impact in the
following areas:
· Academic
Achievement
· Leadership Development
· Social Skills and Communication Development
· Career and Education Exploration
· Improved Physical Health and Environmental Awareness
We accomplish this through outdoor activities and
programming that:
· Provide one-on-one support and guidance under the
direction of caring staff and role models.
· Expose youth to confidence- and character-building
activities.
· Develop focus, responsibility and commitment.
· Utilize a strength-based approach to development in lieu
of corrective action.
· Nurture positive relationships with family members, peers
and educators.
· Cultivate self-esteem through a sense of personal
accomplishment.
· Build appreciation for nature and create environmentally
aware youth.
